My third graders absolutely loved this lesson! They enjoyed thinking outside the box to solve the problems presented. In this photo, they chose to solve the problem of children needing sunscreen while playing at the park. Their high-tech model included a robot to obtain the type of desired sunscreen and bring it to the person in need. Other ideas included a car wash set up in which children could walk through and be sprayed down with sunscreen, a trampoline that kids could bounce on while wearing goggles and sunscreen would apply, It was wonderful to see students problem solve not only the problems, but as they created their prototypes.
We extended the lesson and created our projects in 3D or 2D and then laid them out as a park. The students had so much fun with this activity. Figuring out how to organize the different structures and then how they would all fit together used collaboration, communication and teamwork!
