My Prek 3 & 4 loved this activity. We discussed the parts of the nose and what the nose tells us and then we made plan-doh models. While they did that, and because they are such young groups, I went around the room and let students smell cups of things to guess what they were. I used ground coffee, crushed Oreo, syrup, popcorn, lemon, parmesan cheese, mustard, lemon, apple, banana, lime. They loved this activity and guessing what the scents were. Most of the 4 year olds knew every smell. My 3 year olds knew what smelled good and what smelled bad but had a hard time determining most of the smells. They were right on with the banana though.
This is a great lesson for Prek – can’t wait to try it with the K/1 class
My second and third loved being ENT Doctors. They created a 3-D nose using Play Dough, making sure that the nose had two nostrils and nose hairs. They also took brown paper bags home and put something with their favorite scent on it and brought them back the next day. We then all closed our eyes and tried to see if we could guess the smell in the bag. I also incorporated a couple YouTube videos about the nose. Needless to say we are all a nose ahead of the rest of the kids in our school when it comes to knowing info about being an ENT Doctor!
