This lesson was amazing. I teach kindergarten and this week we were exploring the role of paleontologist. With the help from my classroom parents, we were able to fully transform into the role of a paleontologist. The students each received a hardhat, and I made grocery bag vests for them. The students participated in their own dig site. Prior to starting this activity, I used the materials that were here. The students loved seeing the vocabulary with the pictures and we began using the proper terminology. While rotating through their dig sites, one of our activities was the writing extension. I truly love how they have 2 versions for this. Version A is perfect for my students. They are able to complete this activity independently. At the end of our dino dig, they each received their badge. My students go crazy for them. They LOVE that they are experts now in this field. I am so happy I can incorporate STEM Career Adventures into my classroom weekly.
My students loved this! Prior to doing the dig site we made fossils out of salt dough and then I hid those in the sand for their dig site along with small dinosaurs. We learned the vocabulary and then they had to build the dig site and set up the grid. When the dig was set up they could start digging. When they dug something up they had to write down the coordinates showing where they found it and then one thing about what they found, saying how a key feature of the organism helped it survive.
